THE FLINT RIVER IN HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA

The Flint River runs through Madison County in North Alabama, feeding into the Tennessee River and forming one of the region's most popular waterways for kayaking, tubing, and fishing. The stretch near Brownsboro, where TGL Adventures sits, is calm and shallow enough for a beginner's first paddle, while still offering enough current to make the float feel like a real trip down the river, not a flat-water crawl. It's one of the closest true river paddling destinations to Huntsville, which is part of why it draws families from the city as well as visitors making a weekend of it from Nashville or Birmingham.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE FLINT RIVER

Sunscreen, water shoes or sandals that stay on, a dry bag for anything you don't want to get wet, and drinking water. Leave your phone charger, wallet, and anything else you can't afford to lose in the car.

  • Water and sunscreen

  • Shoes that strap on

  • Dry bag for phone and keys

  • Leash for your dog, pets welcome

WATER SAFTEY, MINIMUM AGE,
AND LIFE JACKETS

Every paddler wears a US Coast Guard approved life jacket, required on the water regardless of age or swimming ability. There is no minimum age to paddle with TGL Adventures, a parent or legal guardian must sign for any minor participant. The Flint here is a calm, beginner-friendly stretch, not whitewater, and staff monitor river levels before every trip, cancelling and rescheduling rather than sending paddlers out if conditions turn unsafe. TGL rents kayaks only, tubing is not offered.

HOW THE SHUTTLE WORKS

TGL runs the shuttle between your take-out and put-in, so you launch, float, and get picked up without arranging your own second vehicle. The shuttle is $20-$30 per person and can be added at booking, no separate call required.

STAY THE NIGHT AFTER YOUR FLOAT

The float is the first half of the trip. TGL Adventures also has geodome glamping and riverside camping on the same property, so you can paddle in the morning and sleep on the river that night instead of driving home.
